Our take on the Alvantor Japanese Floor Mattress Foldable 4 Inch Futon with Washable Cover

The Alvantor Japanese Floor Mattress is a 4-inch foldable futon pad with a removable, washable cover, sold in Twin size. It is meant for sleeping on the floor, guest beds, dorm rooms and small apartments where a full bed frame will not fit. The 4-inch loft is thicker than a traditional shikibuton but thin enough to fold for storage. It is a budget floor-sleeping option rather than a mattress replacement.

Questions and answers

Is a 4-inch floor mattress thick enough to sleep on every night?
For back sleepers of average weight it can work, but most side sleepers and heavier adults will feel the floor through 4 inches. If it is your main bed, plan on adding a topper or choosing a thicker model.
How does this compare with a traditional Japanese shikibuton?
It is similar in concept but thicker at 4 inches and comes with a washable cover, which traditional cotton shikibutons usually lack. Traditional futons are often firmer and need regular airing and sunning.
Can the cover be washed?
Yes. The cover is removable and washable, which is the main practical advantage over an uncovered floor pad. Check the care label for water temperature before washing.
Does it fold small enough to store?
It folds into a compact stack for a closet or under a bed, which is the point of the tri-fold design. Expect a bulky package rather than something you can tuck into a drawer.
What size should I get for one adult?
Twin is the usual choice for one adult. Couples or anyone who moves a lot in sleep should size up, since a Twin leaves little room to roll.
When is the best time to buy?
Floor mattresses and futons see the deepest discounts around back-to-school season and major holiday sales. Compare the current price against its recent range before buying.
