Our take on the Apple 2024 MacBook Pro M4 Pro

The 2024 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 Pro chip is Apple's mid-tier pro laptop: a 14-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 24 GB of unified memory and a 1 TB SSD in a black aluminum body. The 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR screen runs at 3024 x 1964 with ProMotion up to 120Hz, and Apple rates battery life at up to 22 hours. Ports include three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C, HDMI, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack. It is a strong pick for video, code and photo work that needs more GPU headroom than the base M4 but not the M4 Max.

Pros
  • M4 Pro's 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU handle 4K multicam edits and heavy compiles
  • 24 GB unified memory is a comfortable step up from the 16 GB base models
  • Up to 22 hours rated battery life; real mixed use typically lands well above a full workday
  • Liquid Retina XDR display: 3024 x 1964, 1600 nits peak HDR, ProMotion 120Hz
  • Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, SDXC and MagSafe 3 mean fewer dongles
  • Quiet under sustained load compared with Intel-era Pros
Cons
  • Expensive, and RAM and SSD cannot be upgraded after purchase
  • 24 GB and 1 TB are fixed at purchase; heavy VM or 8K work may want more
  • Not a gaming laptop; many titles still run through translation
  • Heavier and thicker than a MacBook Air, at about 3.5 lb
  • Only three USB-C ports, all Thunderbolt, so older USB-A gear needs an adapter

Questions and answers

Is the M4 Pro MacBook Pro worth it over the base M4?
Yes if you edit video, work in 3D or compile large projects, where the extra GPU cores and memory bandwidth show up. For writing, browsing and spreadsheets, the base M4 or a MacBook Air is enough.
How does it compare with the M3 Pro model?
The M4 Pro adds CPU and GPU cores, Thunderbolt 5 and slightly better efficiency, so exports and renders finish faster. If you already own an M3 Pro, the jump is modest; from Intel or M1, it is large.
What is the real battery life?
Apple rates up to 22 hours, which assumes light browsing and video playback. Mixed work with a bright screen and several apps usually runs 12 to 16 hours, still a full day for most people.
Can I upgrade the RAM or SSD later?
No. Memory is soldered into the M4 Pro package and the SSD is not user-replaceable, so choose 24 GB or more and the storage size you need at checkout.
What comes in the box?
The laptop, a 96W USB-C power adapter and a MagSafe 3 charging cable. No external display cable or mouse is included.
When is it cheapest?
Discounts cluster around back-to-school season, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and after a new model launches. Configure-to-order units with extra RAM or storage are discounted less often than stock configurations.
