Our take on the Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch i9 2.3GHz 1TB

This is the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro with Intel's 9th-gen Core i9 at 2.3GHz, 1TB of SSD storage and a 3072x1920 Retina display. It was the last Intel flagship before Apple Silicon, and it is known for its improved scissor-switch keyboard and six-speaker system. At $479.99 at Walmart as of November 3, 2026, it sits far below what this machine sold for new and below typical used prices for the i9/1TB configuration.

Best forBuyers who need a large Retina screen on a tight budgetUsers running Intel-only or Boot Camp Windows softwareVideo and photo editors who want a big display and lots of portsAnyone who prefers a full-size keyboard and Touch Bar
Pros
  • 16-inch 3072x1920 Retina display with P3 color
  • Scissor-switch Magic Keyboard is far more reliable than the 2016–2019 butterfly design
  • Six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers
  • Four Thunderbolt 3 ports plus a headphone jack
  • 1TB SSD is generous for the price
Cons
  • Intel i9 runs hot and throttles under sustained load
  • Battery life is well behind M-series MacBooks
  • Apple Silicon support for Intel Macs is winding down
  • No SD card slot or HDMI port
  • 720p webcam and older Wi-Fi 5

Questions and answers

Is this MacBook Pro still worth buying in 2026?
At $479.99 at Walmart as of November 3, 2026, it is a cheap way to get a 16-inch Retina screen and 1TB of storage. It is a poor choice if you need long battery life or the longest macOS support.
How does it compare to an M1 Pro 16-inch?
The M1 Pro is faster in sustained work, runs cooler and lasts much longer on battery. This Intel model wins mainly on price and on running Intel-only or Boot Camp Windows software.
Will it run the latest macOS?
It shipped with macOS Catalina and has received later releases, but Apple has been dropping Intel Macs from new macOS versions. Check the current supported list before buying for long-term use.
Does it have ports for monitors and SD cards?
It has four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports and a headphone jack. You need adapters or a dock for HDMI, SD cards and USB-A.
What comes in the box?
A 96W USB-C power adapter and a USB-C charging cable, plus the laptop. Confirm the listing includes the charger, since used units sometimes ship without one.
When is the best time to buy?
Prices on Intel MacBooks keep falling as Apple Silicon takes over. Watch for clearance and holiday sales, and compare against used listings, since only one store priced it new as of November 3, 2026.
