Our take on the Apple Refurbished iPad Wi-Fi

This is Apple's refurbished 8th-generation iPad, a 10.2-inch tablet with the A12 Bionic chip, Touch ID, and support for the 1st-gen Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. It is a 2020-era device, so it handles streaming, browsing, notes, and light games well but is not a performance machine. Refurbished units ship with an aftermarket charger and cable, not Apple's original accessories. The latest best price is $159 at Distritech as of November 3, which sits at the low end of its recent range for a certified refurbished unit.

Questions and answers

Is this refurbished iPad worth it?
Yes, if you want an Apple tablet for streaming, notes, and kids' use at a low price. At $159 at Distritech as of November 3, it costs far less than a new iPad, but expect a 2020-era chip and aftermarket accessories.
How does it compare to the 9th-gen iPad?
The 9th-gen iPad adds the A13 chip, a True Tone display, and 64 GB base storage. This 8th-gen model is cheaper and fine for basic tasks, but the 9th-gen will stay smooth longer.
How long does the battery last?
Apple rates it at about 10 hours of web browsing or video over Wi-Fi, backed by an 8,686 mAh battery. Refurbished units vary, so check the reported battery health before buying.
Does it work with the Apple Pencil?
Yes, it supports the 1st-generation Apple Pencil, which charges by plugging into the Lightning port. It does not work with the 2nd-gen Pencil.

You get the iPad 8th Gen, an aftermarket premium wall charger, and a USB cable. Apple's original box and charger are not included.
When is it cheapest?
Refurbished iPad prices dip during back-to-school and Black Friday sales. The current $159 at Distritech as of November 3 is already near the low end of its recent range.
