Our take on the Arcade Classics Atari Centipede Ultra Arcade

The Arcade Classics Atari Centipede Ultra Arcade is a tabletop-style arcade cabinet built around a 17-inch display, styled after the classic Centipede machine. It runs on Windows, so it behaves like a small PC as well as a game cabinet. It is a plug-in home unit, not a handheld. At $159 at Distritech as of November 3, it sits at the low end of its recent price range, making this a comparatively cheap way into a dedicated arcade cabinet.

Questions and answers

Is the Centipede Ultra Arcade worth $159?
At $159 at Distritech as of November 3, it is a low-cost way to get a dedicated 17-inch arcade cabinet. It makes the most sense if you specifically want the Centipede cabinet look and a Windows-based machine.
Does it come with games built in?
It is branded around Atari's Centipede, and because it runs Windows, additional games can be added through software. Check the box contents for the exact preinstalled lineup before buying.
Is it battery powered or handheld?
No. It is a plug-in arcade cabinet, not a handheld, so it needs a power outlet and a spot on a desk or floor.
Can I use it as a regular Windows PC?
It runs Windows, so in principle yes, but the cabinet controls and 17-inch screen suit arcade play better than general desktop work.
How does it compare with a full-size arcade cabinet?
It is far cheaper and much smaller than a full-size machine, but it gives up the standing-height cabinet and full control panel. For a game room on a budget, the trade-off is reasonable.
When is it cheapest?
The $159 Distritech price as of November 3 is already near the bottom of its recent range. Waiting for a deeper cut is a gamble; arcade cabinets like this tend to discount around major sales.
What do buyers say about the Arcade Classics Atari Centipede Ultra Arcade?
Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 35 ratings.
