Our take on the Arcade Classics Atari Star Wars Ultra Series Free Standing Electronic Game

The Arcade Classics Atari Star Wars Ultra Series is a free-standing electronic game that recreates the 1983 Atari Star Wars arcade cabinet in a home-size form. It is a single-game unit built around the original vector-style space combat, with a yoke-style control and a cabinet that stands on its own. It is a display piece as much as a game, aimed at fans of the film and of early-80s arcades.

Best forStar Wars fans who want a playable cabinet at homeRetro arcade collectorsGame room or basement displayNostalgic gift for someone who played the 1983 original
Pros
  • Recreates a landmark 1983 arcade game in a stand-alone cabinet
  • Yoke-style controls suit the X-wing combat the game is known for
  • Free-standing design works as a display piece, not just a toy
  • Single-game focus keeps it simple to set up and play
  • Fits a home game room better than a full-size original cabinet
Cons
  • Only one game included, so replay value depends on how much you like Star Wars
  • Not handheld and not portable; it needs floor space
  • Small-scale replica controls and screen will feel different from a real arcade cabinet
  • Limited appeal outside Star Wars and retro arcade fans

Questions and answers

Is it worth buying?
If you specifically want the 1983 Star Wars arcade game in a stand-alone cabinet, it is a reasonable pick. If you want variety, a multi-game cabinet gives more play for the money.
How does it compare with the original arcade cabinet?
It is a home-size replica, not a full-size machine. The screen, controls and sound are scaled down, so expect the same game with a smaller feel.
Does it need batteries or a power outlet?
It is a free-standing electronic game, so plan on powering it where it stands. Check the listing for the exact power requirement before you buy.
How much space does it take up?
It stands on the floor on its own, so it needs a spot in a game room or corner rather than a shelf. Measure your space before ordering.
What comes in the box?
The unit is the cabinet with the Star Wars game built in. Confirm the included power adapter and any assembly parts on the listing before you buy.
When is it cheapest?
Retro arcade cabinets usually drop during holiday sales and clearance events. Watch the price history and buy when it falls below its recent range.
