Our take on the Ashley Frankwell Bookcase

The Ashley Frankwell is a freestanding contemporary bookcase with a black metal frame, offset glass shelves and gold-tone accents. It stands 70 inches tall and about 36 inches wide, with a geometric silhouette that reads as a display piece rather than plain storage. At $239.99 at JCPenney as of November 5, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range across 7 stores. Assembly is required, and the open, doorless design means everything on it stays visible.

Pros
  • Offset glass shelves give it a distinctive look
  • Open back and sides keep a room feeling light
  • Tall 70-inch frame holds a lot without a big footprint
  • Black frame with gold-tone accents suits modern decor
  • Freestanding, so no wall anchoring hardware beyond the included screws
Cons
  • Glass shelves need careful handling and regular dusting
  • No doors or drawers, so clutter is always on show
  • Not adjustable, which limits what fits on each shelf
  • Assembly required with the included screws and Allen wrench
  • Not a corner unit, so it needs a flat wall or open floor spot

Questions and answers

Is the Ashley Frankwell bookcase worth it?
At $239.99 at JCPenney as of November 5, 2026, it is a reasonable price for a 70-inch glass-and-metal display bookcase. Buy it for the look; if you need closed storage or adjustable shelves, look elsewhere.
How tall and wide is it?
It is 70 inches tall and about 36 inches wide (91.44 cm), with a depth of about 12 inches (30.81 cm). Check your wall space and ceiling height before ordering.
Do the shelves adjust?
No. The offset glass shelves are fixed, so measure tall books, vases and decor before you buy. Items over roughly a foot tall may not fit on every shelf.
How hard is assembly?
Ashley ships it flat with screws and an Allen wrench included. Plan on an hour or two and a second person to help steady the frame while the shelves go in.
Can it hold heavy books?
Glass shelves handle moderate loads, but spread weight evenly and keep heavy hardcovers on the lower shelves. It is not designed as a dense library shelf.
When is the price lowest?
Furniture promotions around major holidays and back-to-school sales tend to pull this piece below its usual price. Compare all 7 stores before buying, since the spread between them can be meaningful.
Where is the Ashley Frankwell Bookcase cheapest?
At JCPenney, for $239.99, 20% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Ashley Frankwell Bookcase?
Rated 4.5 out of 5 from 166 ratings.
Where can I buy the Ashley Frankwell Bookcase?
10 stores we checked sell it, including JCPenney, American Furniture Outlet, Athens Furniture Outlet, The Furniture Mart, Home Depot.
