Our take on the Asics Magic Speed 5

The Asics Magic Speed 5 is a lightweight neutral road trainer built for tempo runs and race day. At 190g with a 37.5mm heel and 30.5mm forefoot stack, it pairs a soft, bouncy midsole with a 7mm drop that suits midfoot and forefoot strikers. The engineered mesh upper and rubber outsole keep it durable enough for regular speed sessions. Its best new price is $178.16 at Amazon as of November 3, 2026, with only one store listing it new, so there is little price competition to shop around.

Midfoot and forefoot strikers
Pros
  • Very light at 190g for a cushioned trainer
  • High 37.5mm stack gives plenty of cushioning underfoot
  • 7mm drop works well for midfoot and forefoot landings
  • Neutral platform suits most runners without stability needs
  • Engineered mesh upper is breathable and secure
Cons
  • Only one store lists it new, so no price competition
  • $178.16 is a premium price for a tempo shoe
  • Not a stability shoe for overpronators
  • High stack can feel unstable on sharp turns
  • Limited colorway and size availability with a single seller

Questions and answers

Is the Magic Speed 5 worth $178.16?
It is a fair price for a carbon-plated-style tempo trainer, but with only one store selling it new at $178.16 as of November 3, 2026, you have no cheaper option to compare. Buy it if you want a light, cushioned speed shoe and the fit works for you.
How does it compare to the Magic Speed 4?
The Magic Speed 5 keeps the same lightweight, neutral formula with a slightly higher stack and a 7mm drop. It is a modest update rather than a redesign, so owners of the previous version can skip it unless they want the fresher midsole foam.
What is the drop and stack height?
It has a 37.5mm heel and 30.5mm forefoot stack with a 7mm drop. That is a high-stack shoe, so expect a soft, bouncy ride rather than close ground feel.
Does it fit true to size?
Asics road shoes generally run true to length, and the engineered mesh upper has some give. Runners between sizes or with wide feet should consider going up half a size, since only the standard D width is listed.
Is it good for daily training?
It can handle daily miles, but the light build and speed-oriented ride make it better as a second shoe for tempo days. Runners who want one do-everything trainer may prefer a more cushioned daily model.
What is in the box?
You get the pair of shoes only. There are no extra laces or insoles included.
Where is the Asics Magic Speed 5 cheapest?
At Amazon, for $178.16, as of our latest check.
