Are the lids reusable?

Bands can be reused indefinitely, but flat lids are meant for one sealing cycle. Reusing a lid risks a failed seal, so buy fresh lids each canning season.

Can these jars go in the freezer?

Only if you leave an inch or two of headspace, because food expands and can crack the glass. Ball also sells specific freezer-safe jars.

What sizes does the 12-pack come in?

Ball sells half-pint, pint, 12-ounce, quart and half-gallon jars in 12-packs. Check the listing's capacity, since lids differ between regular and wide mouth.

Do the jars work for water-bath canning?

Yes. They are made for hot-water-bath and pressure canning, and the two-piece lid is what lets air escape during processing.

Are Ball lids compatible with other jars?

Regular-mouth lids fit most standard regular-mouth jars, including Kerr and generic brands. Wide-mouth lids fit wide-mouth jars only.

When is the best time to buy?

Prices dip in late summer and early fall, when stores clear canning stock, and around Black Friday. Buy before the spring canning rush if you need a specific size.

Our take on the Ball Mason Jars, 12 Pack

Ball Mason Jars are the standard American canning jar: soda-lime glass with a two-piece metal lid and band, sold here as a 12-pack. The brand has made them since 1884, and the wide-mouth and regular-mouth sizes share lids, so jars and rings get reused for years. This listing gives no size or price, so check the jar capacity (half-pint, pint, quart) before ordering, since a 12-pack of quarts is a very different buy from a 12-pack of half-pints.
