Our take on the Benchmark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 1.75L Plastic Bottle, 80 Proof (40% ABV)

Benchmark is a Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV) in a 1.75L plastic handle. It is a budget bourbon from the Sazerac family, made for mixing and everyday pours rather than sipping neat. The large plastic format keeps the per-ounce cost low, which is the main reason people buy it.

Questions and answers

Is Benchmark bourbon good for sipping neat?
It is drinkable but simple. At 80 proof it is light and sweet with a short finish, so most people prefer it over ice or in a mixer.
How does Benchmark compare to other budget bourbons?
It sits at the low end alongside names like Evan Williams and Ancient Age. Benchmark is lighter and milder, while Evan Williams Black brings more proof and flavor for a similar price.
Is the plastic bottle a problem?
Not for short-term use. Plastic is fine for mixing and parties, but liquor stored for years in plastic can pick up off flavors, so decant if you plan to keep it long.
What is Benchmark best mixed with?
Cola, ginger ale and lemonade are the usual picks. It also works in whiskey sours and other cocktails where the bourbon is not the star.
Is the 1.75L size a good deal?
The handle is the cheapest way to buy Benchmark per ounce. Compare the per-ounce price against the 750ml bottle, since the small bottle is sometimes discounted more.
