Our take on the Eagle Rare 17 Year Old
Eagle Rare 17 Year Old is a Kentucky straight bourbon from Buffalo Trace, bottled at 90.2 proof after at least 17 years in new charred oak. It is the oldest whiskey in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, and its age shows: heavy oak, dark tobacco, leather and caramel over a long finish. Bottles are released once a year in small quantities and are allocated, so street prices run far above the suggested retail. It is a sipping bourbon for special occasions, not a daily pour.
- 17-year age statement with real oak depth
- 90.2 proof keeps it sippable without water
- Long, full-bodied finish
- Double Gold, 96 points from a spirits competition
- Buffalo Trace distillery pedigree
- Annual limited release, hard to find at retail

What reviewers say
Drinkers who have tried it praise the depth of oak, tobacco and leather and the long finish. The common complaint is availability and price, not quality.
- Rich oak, caramel and dark fruit
- Long, warming finish
- Complexity that rewards slow sipping
- Allocation makes it nearly impossible to buy at retail
- Secondary prices feel steep for a 90-proof pour
- Oak can dominate for palates used to younger bourbon

Questions and answers
- Is Eagle Rare 17 worth the money?
- At its suggested retail it is a strong buy for oak-forward bourbon fans. At secondary-market prices you are paying for scarcity, so try a pour at a bar before spending that much.
- How does it compare to Eagle Rare 10 Year?
- Same distillery and mashbill, but the 17 Year is older, higher proof and much oakier. The 10 Year is fruitier and easier to find.
- What proof is it?
- 90.2 proof, or 45.1% alcohol by volume, in a 750ml bottle.
- When is it released?
- It ships once a year as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, usually in the fall. Retail allotments are small and often sold by lottery.
- How should I drink it?
- Neat in a glencairn, or with a few drops of water to open the oak and caramel. Ice mutes the long finish.
- What does it taste like?
- Dark tobacco, cherry, leather, pepper, caramel and vanilla, with oak and spice on the nose and a long, full-bodied finish.
