Our take on the Black Diamond Technician Pro Mid Men's Approach Shoes

The Black Diamond Technician Pro Mid is a men's mid-cut approach shoe built for scrambling and via ferrata, with a waterproof leather upper and a sticky rubber sole. It sits at the top of Black Diamond's approach line, above the lighter Technician. At $269.95 at Backcountry.com as of November 6, 2026, it is the only new price listed, so there is no cheaper store to compare against.

Questions and answers

Is the Technician Pro Mid actually waterproof?
Yes. Black Diamond lists a waterproof leather upper, so it handles rain, wet grass and shallow stream crossings. It is not a rubber boot, so prolonged submersion will still soak through.
How does it compare to the low-cut Technician?
The Pro Mid adds a higher collar for ankle support and a waterproof leather build. The low-cut version is lighter and breathes better but offers less protection on scree and wet ground.
What is the fit like?
It is listed in medium width with a cushioned midsole. The leather upper is stiff at first, so most buyers should expect a break-in period and consider sizing for thicker socks.
Can I climb in these shoes?
They are approach shoes, not climbing shoes. The sticky rubber edges well on easy rock and scrambles, but they lack the downturn and tight fit for technical climbing.
What is a fair price for these?
The only new price listed is $269.95 at Backcountry.com as of November 6, 2026. That is full retail for a premium leather approach shoe, so watch for end-of-season markdowns before paying it.
What is in the box?
One pair of shoes. Insoles are included; laces come fitted. No extra laces or stuff sack are listed.
Where is the Black Diamond Technician Pro Mid Men's Approach Shoes cheapest?
At Backcountry.com, for $269.95, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Black Diamond Technician Pro Mid Men's Approach Shoes?
3 stores we checked sell it, including Backcountry.com, Black Diamond Equipment, InWild US.
