Our take on the Brother MFC-J1205W INKvestment-Tank Wireless Multi-Function Color Inkjet Printer

The Brother MFC-J1205W is a wireless color inkjet all-in-one that prints, copies and scans. It uses Brother's INKvestment Tank cartridges, which hold more ink than standard cartridges and are meant to cut how often you buy replacements. Print speeds are modest at 16 ppm mono and 9 ppm color, and there is no auto-duplex or document feeder. It suits light home and home-office printing rather than heavy volume.

Questions and answers

Is the Brother MFC-J1205W worth it?
It is a reasonable pick for light home printing where long-lasting ink matters more than speed. If you print double-sided often or scan stacks of pages, a model with duplex and an ADF is a better fit.
Does it print double-sided automatically?
No. The MFC-J1205W has no auto-duplex, so you flip pages yourself for two-sided documents.
Can it scan and copy, or is it print-only?
It is a true all-in-one: it prints, copies and scans in color. The flatbed scanner handles single pages and bound documents, but there is no document feeder.
How fast does it print?
Brother rates it at 16 ppm in mono and 9 ppm in color. Real-world color pages with graphics will come out slower.
What ink does it use?
It uses four INKvestment Tank cartridges, one each for black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The tanks hold more ink than standard cartridges, so replacements come less often.
Does it work with phones and Wi-Fi?
Yes. It connects over Wi-Fi and supports wireless printing from the Brother Mobile Connect app and standard mobile print services.
Where can I buy the Brother MFC-J1205W INKvestment-Tank Wireless Multi-Function Color Inkjet Printer?
4 stores we checked sell it, including Amazon, Back Market, eBay, mercari.com.
