Questions and answers

Is the Carter Gold filter worth it over disposable filters?
If you replace 1-inch filters every month or two, a washable filter pays for itself within a year. At $17.89 at eBay as of November 7, 2026, it costs about the same as a few disposables.
How often do I clean it?
Carter says every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on dust and pets. Rinse it, let it dry fully, and use a cleaner for stubborn stains.
Does MERV 8 handle allergies?
It captures most pollen, dust and lint, but MERV 11 to 13 is better for fine particles and smoke. MERV 8 is a reasonable middle ground for most homes.
Will it fit my furnace?
It is 16 x 24 x 1 inches. Measure your filter slot before buying, since nominal and actual sizes can differ slightly.
Can I wash it in a dishwasher?
No. Rinse or soak it by hand and let it dry completely before reinstalling. Heat and detergent can damage the electrostatic media.
When is the price lowest?
Filter prices move little, but spring and fall HVAC season sales are common. Check the price history before buying.
Where is the Carter Gold MERV 8 HVAC & Furnace Filter cheapest?
At The Home Depot, for $64.98, 25% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
