Our take on the Chic Link 4 inch Thick Foldable Japanese Tatami Floor Mattress Futon

The Chic Link 4-inch foldable tatami floor mattress is a tri-fold futon pad meant to be used directly on the floor or as a topper on a firm mattress. It comes in Twin, Full and Queen, is 4 inches thick, and folds into thirds for storage or seating. It is a budget floor-sleeping option, not a mattress replacement, and suits guest setups, dorms and small apartments.

Best forGuest beds and sleepovers where a real mattress is not practicalDorm rooms and small apartments that need bedding that folds awayPeople who prefer a firm, floor-level sleep surfaceAdding a firm layer over a soft or sagging mattress
Pros
  • Folds into thirds for storage under a bed or in a closet
  • 4-inch thickness gives more cushioning than a thin mat
  • Available in Twin, Full and Queen
  • Doubles as a floor seating pad for movies or gaming
  • Low cost compared with a conventional mattress
Cons
  • Firm, thin feel that side sleepers may find hard on hips and shoulders
  • Not a substitute for a mattress for nightly long-term use
  • Tri-fold seams can be felt and may wear over time
  • No washable removable cover mentioned in the specs
  • Queen size is bulky to fold and store

Questions and answers

Is a 4-inch futon thick enough to sleep on every night?
For most adults, no. Four inches of padding is fine for occasional guests or camping-style use, but nightly sleepers usually want 6 inches or more, or a mattress underneath.
How does it compare with a traditional Japanese futon?
It is similar in concept but thicker and firmer than a thin shikibuton, and the tri-fold design makes it easier to store. Traditional futons are usually laid out flat and aired daily rather than folded.
Can I use it on top of a bed?
Yes. It works as a firm topper on a soft or sagging mattress, though the fold seams may be felt through the pad.
What sizes are available?
Twin, Full and Queen. Check the listed width against your frame or floor space, since the Queen is wide and takes up a lot of room when unfolded.
Does it come with a cover or storage bag?
The listing does not specify a removable cover or carry bag, so plan on a separate mattress protector or sheet.
When is the price likely to be lowest?
Floor futons like this tend to dip during back-to-school and holiday sales. Check the price history before buying rather than assuming the current price is the low.
What do buyers say about the Chic Link 4 inch Thick Foldable Japanese Tatami Floor Mattress Futon?
