Our take on the Costway 18 Keys Kids Piano Keyboard with Removable Music Stand

The Costway 18 Keys Kids Piano Keyboard is a small wooden toy piano for children 3 and up, built on an MDF and beech frame with 18 keys and a removable music stand. It runs on 4 AA batteries and has a back power switch for one-key start. It is a first instrument, not a digital keyboard: no volume control, rhythms or demo songs are listed. No current price was provided, so its latest best price cannot be compared with its recent range.

Best forParents introducing a 3- to 5-year-old to a first keyboardBuyers who want a wooden toy piano instead of a plastic oneSmall spaces and playrooms where a full-size keyboard won't fitGifts that encourage hand-eye coordination and finger practice
Pros
  • Real wood frame (MDF and beech) feels sturdier than all-plastic toy pianos
  • 18 keys give a wider range than the common 8- or 13-key toy pianos
  • Removable music stand helps build sheet-music habits early
  • BPA-free materials and rounded corners suit young children
  • Simple one-switch operation at the back
Cons
  • Only 18 keys, so it can't play most beginner piano music
  • Runs on 4 AA batteries; no AC adapter is listed
  • Assembly required out of the box
  • 90-day parts warranty is short for a kids' product
  • No volume control, recording or demo songs listed

Questions and answers

Is this a good first piano for a 3-year-old?
Yes, if the goal is introduction rather than lessons. The 18 keys and wooden body suit small hands, but a child ready for real songs will outgrow it quickly.
How does it compare with an 8-key toy piano?
It has more than twice the keys, so it can play simple melodies an 8-key toy can't. It is also larger and heavier because of the wood frame.
Does it need batteries?
Yes. It takes 4 AA batteries, and no AC adapter is listed. Budget for rechargeables if it gets daily use.
How big is it and does it need assembly?
Assembly is required, and the music stand detaches for storage. Check the listed dimensions against your shelf or play table before buying.
What comes in the box?
The kids piano keyboard and the removable music stand. Batteries are not included.
When is it cheapest?
Toy pianos like this usually drop around back-to-school and holiday sales. Check the price history before buying outside those windows.
