Is the Costway MD-4030 good for a beginner?

Yes. It is simple to assemble and use, with an all-metal mode and a ground-balance knob. Expect basic performance, not precise target ID.

Can I use it in water?

The search coil is waterproof, so you can sweep shallow water and wet sand. Do not submerge the control housing or the rest of the unit.

What batteries does it need?

Two 9-volt alkaline batteries, which are not included. Budget for them on top of the detector price.

Does it tell coins from trash?

Only roughly. It has two iron discrimination levels and two audio tones, so it can reject some iron but cannot identify specific metals.

The detector with its search coil and stem, plus the control unit. Batteries are sold separately.

Budget detectors like this usually drop around Black Friday and end-of-summer sales. Check the price history before buying.

Our take on the Costway MD-4030 Waterproof Metal Detector

The Costway MD-4030 is a low-cost hobby metal detector with a waterproof search coil, two-tone audio and two levels of iron discrimination. It runs on two 9-volt batteries (not included) and offers a ground-balance adjustment for mineralized soil. It is a beginner-level unit aimed at casual beach, park and backyard hunting rather than serious relic or gold prospecting.
