Our take on the Dell PowerEdge R640 Rack Server

The PowerEdge R640 is Dell's 1U dual-socket rack server from the 14th generation, built for dense data-center workloads. This configuration pairs an Intel Xeon Gold processor with 128GB of memory, an Nvidia Quadro T1000 GPU and Windows Server 2022. The 1U chassis limits expansion, so it suits virtualization, web hosting and light GPU work rather than heavy storage. Pricing on refurbished and used units swings widely with CPU model, memory and drive caddies, so compare the exact configuration before buying.

Best forSmall and mid-size businesses consolidating physical servers
Virtualization and private-cloud hosting
Light GPU work such as VDI or transcoding
Buyers of refurbished enterprise hardware
Pros
  • Dual-socket Intel Xeon Gold platform with up to 128GB installed memory
  • 1U form factor fits dense racks and colocation cabinets
  • Quadro T1000 adds GPU capability most 1U servers lack
  • Windows Server 2022 preinstalled saves setup time
  • Broad parts availability and Dell iDRAC remote management
Cons
  • 1U chassis limits drive bays and PCIe expansion
  • Quadro T1000 is a low-power GPU, not for heavy compute
  • Windows Server 2022 licensing adds cost beyond the hardware
  • Used units may ship with worn drives or missing caddies
  • Power and cooling needs suit a server room, not a desk

Questions and answers

Is the PowerEdge R640 still worth buying?
Yes for budget-conscious virtualization or hosting, since 14th-gen Xeon Gold performance remains solid. Check that the exact CPU model and drive configuration match your workload before paying a premium.
How does the R640 compare with the R650?
The R650 is the newer 15th-generation 1U model with newer Xeon Scalable CPUs and PCIe 4.0. The R640 costs less used and is fine if you do not need the newer platform.
Can the R640 run without the Quadro T1000?
Yes. The T1000 is a discrete add-in card, and the server runs normally without it. Removing it frees a slot but does not change CPU or memory capacity.
What is included with this server?
Typically the chassis, one or two Xeon Gold CPUs, 128GB of memory, the Quadro T1000 and a Windows Server 2022 install. Confirm drive caddies, rails and power cords with the seller, since used listings vary.
How much memory can the R640 hold?
With dual processors it supports up to 24 DIMM slots and several terabytes of DDR4 memory, depending on DIMM size. The 128GB here leaves plenty of room to expand.
When is the R640 cheapest?
Prices drop when large fleets are retired, usually after a newer generation ships. Compare listings across stores and watch for units sold without drives or with single CPUs.
