Is the Dell XPS 16 (9640) worth it?

It makes sense if you want a large, bright screen and an RTX 4050 for creative work in a slim chassis. If you mostly browse and write, a cheaper 14-inch model will do the same job.

Is the screen touch or non-touch?

The configuration listed here is non-touch, anti-glare, 1920 x 1200 at 500 nits. Dell also sells touch and higher-resolution panels, so confirm which one a store is offering.

Can I upgrade the RAM or storage later?

Memory is onboard LPDDR5x, so it cannot be upgraded after purchase; choose 32 or 64 GB up front if you need it. The 1 TB M.2 PCIe SSD can be replaced.

How does it compare with the XPS 15?

The XPS 16 is larger, uses the newer Core Ultra 155H platform and offers RTX 4050 graphics. The XPS 15 is smaller and lighter but has less screen area.

What is the battery life really like?

Dell rates it at up to 28 hours, which assumes light use at low brightness. Expect far less when gaming or rendering on the RTX 4050.

XPS laptops typically drop during back-to-school and Black Friday sales, and when a new generation launches. Compare prices across stores before buying.

Our take on the Dell XPS 16 (9640)

The Dell XPS 16 (9640) is Dell's premium 16.3-inch laptop, built around an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H (16 cores, up to 4.8 GHz) with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 6GB GPU. It pairs a 1920 x 1200 anti-glare InfinityEdge panel at 500 nits with LPDDR5x-6400 memory (16, 32 or 64 GB onboard), a 1 TB PCIe SSD and a fingerprint reader, all in an 18.7 mm chassis that weighs 4.7 lb. The configuration listed here is the base FHD+ screen rather than the higher-resolution touch option, so check the panel before buying.
