Is the DeWalt 18" Scroll Saw worth it for a hobbyist?

For hobbyists cutting intricate curves in wood and plastic, the 18-inch throat and variable speed cover most projects. At $299 at Amazon as of November 7, 2026, it sits in the midrange for full-size scroll saws.

What is the difference between this and a smaller scroll saw?

The 18-inch throat lets you turn wider workpieces without repositioning, which smaller 16-inch saws cannot do. The trade-off is a larger footprint on the bench.

What speeds does it run?

It varies from 500 to 1,500 strokes per minute. Use the low end for dense or thick stock and the high end for thin wood and plastic.

Can it make bevel cuts?

Yes. The table tilts 45 degrees to the left and 15 degrees to the right, enough for most decorative and joinery angles.

What blades does it use?

It ships with a carbon steel blade and takes standard pin-end or plain-end scroll saw blades, depending on the clamps. Upgrading to a finer-tooth blade improves clean cuts in thin stock.

When is the price lowest?

Scroll saw prices tend to dip during holiday sales and spring woodworking promotions. Check the price history before buying; the current best is $299 at Amazon as of November 7, 2026.
