Is the DW788 worth it for a hobbyist?

Yes, if you cut curves and fretwork regularly. Its low vibration and easy blade changes make it forgiving for beginners, and it holds up for years.

How does it compare with the DeWalt DW788 Type 2?

The Type 2 is the current version of the same saw, with the same 20-inch capacity and 400 to 1,750 SPM range. Buy the Type 2 unless an older unit is much cheaper.

What thickness of wood can it cut?

It handles most hardwoods up to about 2 inches, but the 1.3 amp motor slows in thick stock. Use sharp blades and a slow feed rate for dense wood.

Does it take pinned or pinless blades?

It uses plain-end pinless blades, which are the standard for fine scroll work. Blades are widely available in sizes from #2 to #12.

What comes in the box?

The saw, a blade, a blade guard and an owner's manual. A stand, foot pedal and extra blades are sold separately.

When is the DW788 cheapest?

It has been $299 at Lowe's as of November 7, 2026, near the low end of its recent range. Watch for holiday sales at the five stores that carry it.
