Our take on the DeWalt 20V Cordless 1/2 in. Impact Wrench, 3/8 in. Impact Wrench, and POWERSTACK Battery Starter Kit

This DeWalt kit pairs a compact ATOMIC 20V brushless 3/8 in. impact wrench with a 1/2 in. impact wrench and a POWERSTACK 20V starter kit. The 3/8 in. wrench delivers up to 1,800 in-lbs of torque, 2,800 RPM and 3,200 IPM across four speed settings, with a hog ring anvil and a 2.375 lb body. The POWERSTACK battery is a compact 1.7 Ah lithium-ion pack that DeWalt says lasts about twice as long as its standard pack. It suits buyers who want one battery platform for two wrench sizes rather than a single high-torque tool.

Pros
  • 1,800 in-lbs and 3,200 IPM is strong for a compact 3/8 in. wrench
  • Four speed settings help avoid over-torquing small fasteners
  • Brushless motor and 2.375 lb body keep it light for overhead work
  • Hog ring anvil holds sockets securely and allows quick changes
  • POWERSTACK pack is small and charges on the standard 20V charger
Cons
  • 1.7 Ah capacity is small; sustained heavy use drains it fast
  • No 1/2 in. high-torque figures are given, so don't assume it matches a dedicated 1/2 in. gun
  • Kit includes one battery, so two tools can't run at once without a spare
  • Hog ring anvils wear over time with heavy socket changes
  • Not a substitute for a breaker bar on rusted or over-torqued bolts

What reviewers say

Owners of the ATOMIC 3/8 in. impact wrench generally rate it highly for its size-to-power ratio, calling it a go-to for lug nuts and suspension bolts. The common complaints are battery run time with small packs and the friction-ring anvil loosening over time.

Pros
  • Strong torque for its compact size
  • Light and easy to handle in tight spaces
  • Four-speed control is useful on smaller fasteners
  • Good value as part of the 20V MAX platform
Cons
  • Run time is short with 1.7 Ah packs
  • Hog ring can loosen and drop sockets
  • Some units arrive with loose anvil play

Questions and answers

Is 1,800 in-lbs enough for lug nuts?
Yes for most passenger cars and light trucks, whose lug nuts are typically torqued to 80–150 ft-lbs (960–1,800 in-lbs). For heavy trucks or rusted fasteners, use a breaker bar first or step up to a high-torque 1/2 in. model.
How is this different from DeWalt's high-torque 1/2 in. impact wrench?
This is the compact ATOMIC line, built for access and weight rather than maximum breakaway torque. DeWalt's high-torque 1/2 in. models are larger and heavier but deliver substantially more torque for stubborn bolts.
How long does the POWERSTACK battery last?
DeWalt rates the 1.7 Ah POWERSTACK at roughly twice the run time of its standard 1.7 Ah pack. Expect a few dozen lug nuts per charge in mixed use; keep a second pack for all-day work.
What sockets fit the 3/8 in. wrench?
It uses standard 3/8 in. square-drive impact sockets with a hog ring anvil. Use impact-rated sockets, not chrome hand sockets, which can crack under impact load.
What's in the box?
The kit includes the 3/8 in. ATOMIC impact wrench, a 1/2 in. impact wrench, one 20V MAX POWERSTACK 1.7 Ah battery and a charger. Confirm the exact contents on the listing before buying.
When is it cheapest?
DeWalt kits typically drop during Black Friday, Father's Day and end-of-season tool events. Check the price history chart to see whether the current price is near the low.
