Our take on the DeWalt 20V MAX Cordless Combo Kit with 5 in. Random Orbit Sander

This is a five-piece DeWalt 20V MAX cordless kit built around a drill/driver, impact driver, and a 5-inch random orbit sander, plus two batteries and a charger. The sander is the unusual piece here: most combo kits stop at drilling and driving, so this one covers sanding and finishing without a cord. DeWalt's 20V MAX line is one of the largest cordless platforms, so batteries and bare tools stay useful for years. It suits someone starting a tool collection or replacing several worn corded tools at once.

Best forHomeowners and DIYers building a first cordless setWoodworkers who want cordless sanding alongside drillingBuyers already on the DeWalt 20V MAX battery platformGift buyers wanting one box that covers common jobs
Pros
  • Five tools on one battery platform, including a sander most kits omit
  • 20V MAX batteries share with a huge range of DeWalt bare tools
  • Lithium-ion packs hold charge in storage better than older NiCd
  • Cordless sander reaches workpieces away from an outlet
  • Drill and impact driver cover the most common fastening jobs
Cons
  • Kit batteries are usually compact 1.5–2.0 Ah packs, short run time for sanding
  • The 5-inch sander drains a compact battery quickly under load
  • No brushless motors at this kit level; less efficient than premium versions
  • Sander dust collection is basic without a shop vac attached
  • Charger is typically a standard-rate unit, not fast

What reviewers say

Owners of DeWalt 20V MAX combo kits generally rate the drill and impact driver highly for power and durability, and treat the sander as a useful bonus. The common complaint is battery run time when sanding, since compact packs empty fast.

Pros
  • Drill and impact driver feel strong for their size
  • Batteries and charger work across the whole 20V MAX line
  • Sander is handy for quick touch-up work off the cord
Cons
  • Compact batteries run down fast in the sander
  • Sander dust bag fills quickly and lets some dust escape
  • Kit bags and cases feel basic

Questions and answers

Is this kit worth it over buying tools separately?
Usually yes if you need most of the five tools and have no 20V MAX batteries. If you already own DeWalt batteries, bare tools often cost less in total.
How does it compare with DeWalt's brushless kits?
Brushless versions run longer per charge and last longer, but cost more. This kit uses standard motors, which is fine for occasional home use.
How long does the battery last when sanding?
Expect well under an hour of continuous sanding on a compact pack, less under heavy pressure. A larger 4.0 Ah or 5.0 Ah battery extends run time noticeably.
What size sanding discs does the sander take?
It uses standard 5-inch hook-and-loop discs with 8 holes, which are widely available. Buy a mixed grit pack rather than only one grit.
What is in the box?
Typically the drill/driver, impact driver, sander, two 20V MAX batteries, a charger, and a kit bag, plus a side handle and belt hook for the drill. Confirm the exact tool list for the specific kit number.
When is it cheapest?
Combo kits drop most around Black Friday, Father's Day, and end-of-season clearance. Prices also dip when DeWalt refreshes a kit with new batteries.
