Our take on the Duluth Trading DuluthFlex Fire Hose Ultimate Relaxed Fit Cargo Pants

The DuluthFlex Fire Hose Ultimate Relaxed Fit Cargo Pants are men's work pants built from a 97% cotton, 3% spandex twill that Duluth calls Fire Hose fabric, made to resist abrasion and shed water and stains. They have 11 pockets, including cargo pockets and jeans-style back pockets, and a relaxed fit that sits at the waist. The stretch fabric and gusseted construction suit bending, kneeling and climbing on a job site.

Best for
Men who do physical work and need room to move
Buyers who want stain- and water-resistant pants without rain gear
Men who carry a lot and want cargo plus hand and back pockets
Shoppers replacing stiff canvas work pants with something stretchier
Pros
  • Stretch cotton twill moves with you instead of binding at the knees
  • Fabric repels water and stains, useful on muddy or oily jobs
  • 11 pockets, including cargo pockets, for tools and phone
  • Relaxed fit sits at the waist and leaves room through the seat and thighs
  • Machine washable and holds up to repeated washing
Cons
  • Relaxed fit is baggy for slimmer builds
  • Cotton-rich fabric is heavy and warm in hot weather
  • Water repellency fades with washing and needs re-treating
  • Cargo pockets add bulk and can snag on equipment
  • Sizing runs inconsistently, so try before committing to a waist size

Questions and answers

Are these pants worth the price for daily work?
If you kneel, climb or crawl most days, the abrasion-resistant stretch fabric and 11 pockets justify the cost over cheaper canvas pants. Casual wearers will find them heavier than needed.
How do they compare with standard Fire Hose cargo pants?
The Ultimate version uses the stretch DuluthFlex fabric and a relaxed fit, while standard Fire Hose pants are stiffer and less forgiving. Choose the Ultimate if comfort and movement matter more than a crisp, structured look.
Do they really repel water?
They shed light rain, splashes and spills, but they are not waterproof. The treatment wears off with washing, so expect to reapply a spray-on repellent after several months.
How does the sizing run?
The relaxed fit runs roomy, and owners report inconsistency between pairs. Measure your waist and check the size chart rather than assuming your usual jeans size.
What is in the box?
One pair of pants. No belt, tool belt or extra hardware is included.
When is the best time to buy?
Duluth Trading discounts workwear during seasonal sales and clearance events. Watch the price history and buy when it drops below the typical full price.
