Our take on the Ebern Designs Rafael Armless Pullout Sofa Module

The Ebern Designs Rafael is a single armless sofa module with a pullout sleeper, sold as a piece to add to a sectional or use alone. It has a wood frame, foam and memory-foam fill, velvet or fabric upholstery, and a 500 lb weight capacity. At 45.7 inches wide and 54.5 inches deep, it is a compact chair-sized seat that folds out into a small bed. Its price history is thin, so check the current quote against the range shown on this page before buying.

Pros
  • Pullout sleeper in a compact 45.7-inch-wide footprint
  • 500 lb weight capacity is high for a single module
  • Memory foam seat and back fill
  • Stain-resistant fabric wipes clean
  • Armless design slides against walls or into a sectional
Cons
  • Armless: no side support for sitting or leaning
  • 54.5-inch depth takes real floor space even closed
  • Single module only; you buy the rest of the sofa separately
  • Only 6 ratings, so the 3.8 average is a weak signal
  • Velvet needs more care than flat-weave fabric

Questions and answers

Is the Rafael module worth it?
It makes sense if you already own or plan to build an Ebern Designs modular sectional and want a sleeper seat. As a standalone sofa it is small and armless, so compare it with a full sleeper sofa first.
How big is the bed when pulled out?
The module is 45.7 inches wide and 54.5 inches deep, and the pullout extends from that depth. Treat it as a single sleeper for one adult, not a two-person bed.
Does it work with other sectional pieces?
It is designed as an armless module for a modular sectional, so it joins best with matching Rafael pieces. Check the connector type and height against your existing sofa before ordering.
What is the seat like?
The seat uses foam with a memory foam core and is described as very soft. Seat height is 18.1 inches, which suits most adults.
When is the price lowest?
Sleeper modules usually drop during holiday sales and end-of-season clearance. Watch the price history on this page and buy when the quote is near the low end of its range.
