Is the Elgato Facecam 4K worth it over a 1080p webcam?

If you stream or record regularly and want a sharper, more adjustable image, the 4K sensor and Camera Hub controls justify the step up. For casual calls, a good 1080p camera costs much less and is usually enough.

Does it work without the Camera Hub software?

Yes. It works as a standard USB webcam, but you lose the fine exposure, color and HDR controls. Onboard settings let your tuned look carry over to other computers.

What do I need to record in 4K?

A USB 3 port and a reasonably recent CPU, plus software that accepts a 4K webcam feed. Many apps cap webcam input at 1080p, so check your streaming or recording app first.

Does it have a microphone?

No. The Facecam 4K is video only, so plan on a separate USB or XLR microphone for streaming and calls.

When is the best time to buy it?

Webcams usually see discounts around major sales events and when Elgato refreshes its lineup. Compare current store prices against its recent range before buying.

Our take on the Elgato Facecam 4K

The Elgato Facecam 4K is a USB webcam aimed at streamers and creators who want a sharp image without a DSLR setup. It records up to 4K and pairs with Elgato's Camera Hub software for exposure, color, framing and HDR control, and it saves your look onboard so it carries between computers. It sits in the premium webcam tier, well above basic 1080p cameras, so it makes most sense for people already building a streaming or recording setup.
