Our take on the Epiphone Les Paul Special

The Epiphone Les Paul Special is a stripped-down, solid-mahogany Les Paul with a 24.75-inch scale, a single cutaway and a fixed Tune-O-Matic bridge. It skips binding and a maple cap, so it is the cheapest way into the Les Paul shape and feel. The best new price is $349.99 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, with two stores listing it new.

Pros
  • Solid mahogany body and neck give a warm, thick tone
  • 24.75-inch scale and Les Paul shape feel familiar to most players

  • Single cutaway gives good access to upper frets
Cons
  • No maple cap or binding, so it looks plainer than a Standard
  • PVC nut is a weak point and often replaced
  • Stock pickups and hardware are basic at this price
  • Rosewood fingerboard varies in darkness between units
  • Heavier than many modern budget guitars
