Questions and answers

Is the Fort Knox PB1 worth $300?
At $300.00 at Amazon as of November 4, 2026, you pay for thick steel and a mechanical lock that will not fail. Cheaper boxes use thinner steel and electronic locks. If you want quick access without batteries, it is a fair price.
Will a full-size pistol with a light fit?
The interior is 11.75 inches wide, 9.75 inches deep and 3.5 inches tall. Most full-size pistols fit, but a mounted light or red dot can push past the 3.5-inch height. Measure your setup first.
Does it need batteries?
No. The Simplex lock is fully mechanical and gives 1,081 possible combinations. There is nothing to charge or replace.
Can I bolt it down?
Yes. It has four pre-drilled 3/8-inch holes, and Fort Knox recommends anchoring it to a solid surface. Bolting it down also stops someone from carrying off the 22-lb box.
How does it compare to the Fort Knox pistol box with an electronic lock?
The PB1 keeps the same steel body and gas-strut door but uses the mechanical Simplex lock. That trades biometric or keypad speed for reliability and no power source.
When is it cheapest?
Prices vary by store, and 4 stores list it new. Check the price history before buying; the current best is $300.00 at Amazon as of November 4, 2026.
Where is the Fort Knox Original Handgun Safe PB1 Pistol Box cheapest?
