Our take on the FPD 50-inch Smart TV 4K UHD

The FPD 50-inch Smart TV is a budget 4K LED set running Samsung's Tizen platform, so you get Netflix and the usual streaming apps with SmartThings and Bluetooth built in. It covers the basics: three HDMI ports, HDR10, Dolby Digital Surround EX audio and wide 178-degree viewing angles. Brightness is modest at 330 nits and the panel is 60 Hz, so it suits a bedroom or casual living room rather than a bright, sunlit room or serious gaming. No current price was supplied for this listing, so check the price history on this page before buying.

Pros
  • Native 4K resolution at 50 inches
  • Tizen smart platform with Netflix and major apps
  • Three HDMI inputs for a console, soundbar and streamer
  • HDR10 support and 178-degree viewing angles
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct for wireless audio and casting
Cons
  • 330 nits is dim; HDR will look flat in a bright room
  • 60 Hz panel limits motion smoothness for sports and gaming
  • 2 lb listed weight is implausible for a 50-inch TV; confirm before wall mounting
  • Only two speakers with no subwoofer or Dolby Atmos
  • No HDMI 2.1 features like 120 Hz or VRR

Questions and answers

Is this TV good for gaming?
Only casually. The 60 Hz panel and lack of HDMI 2.1, VRR or low-latency game mode mean fast shooters and racing games will show motion blur and input lag. A console will work fine at 4K 60 Hz for slower games.
Is 330 nits bright enough?
For a dim bedroom or evening viewing, yes. In a bright room with direct sun, the picture will look washed out, and HDR10 content will not show much highlight punch at this brightness.
What is in the box?
Typically the TV, a stand, a remote and a power cable. A wall mount is not included even though the set supports wall mounting, so budget for a VESA bracket separately.
Does it run the same apps as a Samsung TV?
It uses the Tizen platform, the same system Samsung TVs use, so Netflix and the main streaming apps are available. App selection and update timing can differ from Samsung's own sets.
How does it compare with a Samsung 50-inch 4K TV?
You get the same Tizen interface for less money, but expect a dimmer panel, weaker speakers and fewer picture-processing features than Samsung's own models. It is a value pick, not a picture-quality upgrade.
When is the best time to buy?
Budget 50-inch 4K TVs usually drop around Black Friday, back-to-school and Super Bowl season. Check the price history on this page to see whether the current price is near its low.
