Our take on the Hercules 12V Lithium-Ion Cordless Compact 3/8 in. Drill/Driver – Tool Only

The Hercules 12V Cordless Compact 3/8 in. Drill/Driver is a tool-only drill aimed at tight spaces and light fastening work. It pairs a two-speed gearbox (400/1,500 RPM) with 312 in-lbs of torque, a 19-setting clutch and an all-metal gear train, in a body about 7-1/2 in. long and 2 lb. The brushed motor and 3/8 in. chuck keep it simple and cheap, but it is a light-duty tool, not a replacement for an 18V drill. Best forApartment and household repairs where a small, light drill matters
Driving screws and assembling furniture in tight cabinets or corners
Buyers already on the Hercules 12V battery platform
A second drill for light work alongside a bigger 18V tool
Pros
  • Small and light: about 2 lb and 7-1/2 in. long
  • Two speeds plus a 19-setting clutch for controlled driving
  • All-metal gear construction for durability
  • Built-in LED light for dark cabinets and closets
  • 3/8 in. chuck takes common drill and driver bits
Cons
  • Tool only: no battery or charger in the box
  • Brushed motor: less efficient and shorter-lived than brushless
  • 312 in-lbs is modest; it will struggle with large hole saws or auger bits
  • Locked to Hercules 12V batteries, a smaller platform than major brands
  • No hammer mode and no brushless version at this price tier

Questions and answers

Is this drill worth it?
Yes if you want a small, light drill for home repairs and already own or plan to buy Hercules 12V batteries. If you need to drill masonry or large holes, spend more on an 18V brushless drill instead.
What comes in the box?
The drill/driver only. No battery, charger or bits are included, so budget for a Hercules 12V battery and charger if you don't have them.
How does it compare with an 18V drill?
It is much smaller and lighter, but 312 in-lbs of torque is well below most 18V drills. Use it for screws and small holes; use an 18V tool for big bits, masonry and heavy framing.
What size bits does the chuck take?
The 3/8 in. chuck takes bits with shanks up to 3/8 in., which covers most drill bits and driver bits. Hex-shank bits over 3/8 in. won't fit.
How long does the battery last?
Runtime depends on the Hercules 12V battery you buy, which is sold separately. Expect enough for light screwdriving and small holes; heavy continuous use will drain it quickly.
When is it cheapest?
Tool-only drills like this usually drop during store promotions and holiday sales. Check the price history on this page and buy when it sits near its recent low.
Where can I buy the Hercules 12V Lithium-Ion Cordless Compact 3/8 in. Drill/Driver – Tool Only?
