Is the Honda HRN 216 worth it over a cheaper store-brand mower?

If you mow regularly and want a Honda engine, a steel deck and a dealer network for parts, yes. If your lawn is small and flat, a lighter and cheaper mower will do the same job.

Does the HRN 216 have electric start?

No. It uses a handle-mounted recoil pull starter. There is no battery or key start on this model.

Can it mulch and bag, or do I need a kit?

It can bag, mulch and side discharge with the standard single blade and included plug and chute. The twin-blade QuadraCut system is an optional accessory.

How fast does the Smart Drive self-propulsion go?

Speed is set by a lever on the handle and is continuously variable, so you match your walking pace rather than picking fixed gears. Honda does not publish a top speed for this model.

What lawn size is the HRN 216 suited to?

It fits most residential lawns up to about half an acre. Larger lawns are better served by a wider deck or a riding mower.

When is the HRN 216 cheapest?

Mower prices tend to drop at the end of the mowing season, roughly late summer into fall, and around spring sales events. Check the price history before buying.

The Honda HRN 216 is a 21-inch self-propelled gas walk-behind mower built around a 160 cc OHC four-stroke engine. It uses Honda's Smart Drive variable-speed transmission, a handle-mounted recoil starter and a 16-gauge steel deck, and it can bag, mulch or side discharge. Six cutting-height positions run from about 1.125 to 4 inches. It is a mid-range Honda aimed at homeowners with lawns up to roughly half an acre who want a simple, durable push mower with Honda engine reliability.
