Is the HP 17.3-inch i3 laptop worth it?

Yes if you want a big screen for documents, streaming and browsing on a tight budget. No if you edit video, game or keep dozens of tabs open; 8 GB RAM and the N305 will hold you back.

Can I upgrade the RAM or storage?

The 512 GB SSD can usually be swapped for a larger M.2 drive. RAM on most HP 17 models is soldered, so buy the 16 GB version if you think you will need it.

How does the i3-N305 compare to an i3 or i5?

The N305 has eight efficiency cores, so it multitasks better than older dual-core i3 chips but trails a modern Core i5 in sustained speed. It is fine for office work and video calls, not for heavy workloads.

Does the battery really last 10 hours?

The 10-hour figure is a light-use rating. Expect roughly 6 to 8 hours of mixed browsing and video, less at full brightness.

What comes in the box?

The laptop, a power adapter and paperwork. A mouse, sleeve and external monitor are not included, and the only named video port is HDMI.

Back-to-school season and Black Friday are when 17-inch HP budget models drop most. Watch the price history rather than buying at list price.

Our take on the HP 17.3" Full HD Laptop Intel Core i3-N305

The HP 17.3" Full HD Laptop is a large-screen budget notebook built around Intel's Core i3-N305, an eight-core efficiency chip, with 8 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. It stands out for its 17.3-inch 1080p anti-glare screen, backlit keyboard and 4.6 lb weight, which is light for its size. Battery life is rated at 10 hours, and the gold finish sets it apart from typical gray budget laptops. It suits desk and couch use more than daily carrying.
