Is the HP Essential 17.3 good for everyday use?

Yes for browsing, email, video and documents. It struggles with many open tabs, photo editing or games because of 4GB of RAM and the N100 chip.

Can the RAM or storage be upgraded?

Storage is a 128GB SSD-class drive and RAM is 4GB DDR4; check the specific model's service manual before buying, since many N100 laptops have limited or soldered memory.

Does it come with a mouse and Office?

This bundle includes an HP wireless mouse and a one-year Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft 365 is a subscription, so it renews at cost after the first year.

Is the screen good for watching video?

The 17.3-inch size is great for video, but 1600x900 resolution is below full HD, so fine detail looks soft.

The best new price seen is $459.99 at Walmart as of November 7, 2026. Budget laptops typically drop during back-to-school and Black Friday sales.

Our take on the HP Essential 17.3" HD+ Touchscreen Laptop Intel N100

The HP Essential is a 17.3-inch touchscreen laptop built around Intel's low-power N100 quad-core chip, 4GB of DDR4 RAM and 128GB of storage. The big draw is the screen size and touch input at a budget price, plus a backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader that are uncommon at this tier. The N100 and 4GB of RAM suit browsing, email, video and documents, not heavy multitasking. Its best new price is $459.99 at Walmart as of November 7, 2026, with 7 stores listing it new.

What reviewers say

Buyers of N100-class 17-inch laptops generally accept slow performance in exchange for screen size and price. Complaints center on 4GB of RAM and small storage rather than build quality.

What people mention

PerformanceMixedFine for browsing and documents, but the N100 and 4GB of RAM slow down with many tabs or apps open.
MemoryCriticised4GB of RAM is the main bottleneck; owners often wish it shipped with 8GB or more.
StorageCriticised128GB fills fast once Windows, updates and a few programs are installed.
ScreenMixedThe 17.3-inch touchscreen is appreciated for size, but 1600x900 looks coarse up close.
BuildMixedPlastic chassis is sturdy enough for desk use but bulky to carry.
BatteryMixedThe low-power chip helps, but a 17-inch panel means real-world runtime falls short of all-day claims.
