Our take on the HP Essential Laptop Computer 17.3 FHD Core 7

The HP Essential is a 17.3-inch full-HD laptop built for desk work, with a matte screen, aluminum body and Intel Core Ultra 5 or Core 7 processors. It pairs 512 GB of SSD storage with up to 14 cores and Windows 11, and the larger chassis leaves room for a numpad on some configurations. Questions and answers

Is the HP Essential 17.3 good for everyday use?: Yes for browsing, Office work, video and light multitasking. The Core Ultra 5 and Core 7 chips with 512 GB SSD are comfortable for those tasks. It is not a gaming or heavy creative laptop.
Does it have a backlit keyboard?: No. The listed configurations have no backlit keyboard, so typing in low light depends on room lighting. Some models do include a numpad.
Is the screen touchscreen?: No. It is a matte, non-touch 17.3-inch display at 1920x1080. The matte finish cuts reflections but you give up touch input.
What ports does it have?: Thunderbolt, USB-C, HDMI, USB-A and a 1/8-inch headphone jack, plus Bluetooth. There is no memory card reader, no optical drive and no SIM slot.
Which processor should I pick, Core Ultra 5 or Core 7?: The Core Ultra 5 (125H, 14 cores) is enough for office work and media. The Core 7 (150U, 10 cores) suits buyers who want a bit more burst speed, though the U-series chip trades some multi-core headroom for lower power.
When is the best time to buy it?: Watch the price history on this page and compare across stores; 17-inch laptops often drop during back-to-school and holiday sales. Buy when the current price sits near the low end of its recent range.
