Is the Humminbird XPLORE worth it over a cheaper fish finder?

If you use side and down imaging and want networking, yes. The MEGA imaging, HD screen and NMEA 2000/Ethernet ports are the main reasons to pay more than a basic sonar unit.

How does it compare with the Humminbird HELIX?

XPLORE is the newer line with a sharper HD display and updated networking. HELIX units remain cheaper and are still widely supported, so pick HELIX on a tight budget and XPLORE for the better screen and connectivity.

The unit, a transom-mount transducer, power cable and mounting hardware. A chart card and networking cables are usually sold separately.

Can I connect it to my trolling motor or other electronics?

Yes. It has NMEA 2000, Ethernet, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so it can share data with compatible Humminbird and Minn Kota gear. Check compatibility with your specific model first.

Is the screen readable in direct sun?

The HD 1280 x 720 display is bright and sharp, and the IPX7 rating handles spray. Polarized sunglasses can still dim some marine screens, so check it in person if you can.

Watch for seasonal sales around spring boating season and fall clearance. Compare prices across stores, since fish finder pricing varies widely by retailer.

Our take on the Humminbird XPLORE

The Humminbird XPLORE is a 9-inch-class (22.86 cm) fish finder and chartplotter with an HD 1280 x 720 display, IPX7 waterproofing, and built-in MEGA Side Imaging+, MEGA Down Imaging+ and Dual Spectrum CHIRP sonar. It adds GPS chartplotting plus NMEA 2000, Bluetooth, Ethernet and Wi-Fi for networking with other boat electronics. The 1,000 W RMS / 8,000 W peak-to-peak sonar output is strong enough for deep-water and saltwater use. It ships with a transom-mount transducer.
