Our take on the Husky 244-Pieces 72-Tooth Ratchet Socket Mechanics Tool Set with Chest Storage

The Husky 244-Piece Mechanics Tool Set is a large mixed SAE and metric socket and ratchet kit that comes in a chest-style storage case. Its 72-tooth ratchets need a 5-degree swing, which helps in tight engine bays and under-dash work. The set covers a wide range of socket sizes plus extensions and accessories, so it can replace several smaller kits. At $186.26 at Home Depot as of November 4, 2026, it sits near the low end of its recent price range, making this a reasonable time to buy.

Pros
  • 244 pieces cover a broad range of SAE and metric sizes
  • 72-tooth ratchets work in tight spaces with a 5-degree swing
  • Chest-style case keeps sockets organized and portable
  • Chrome finish resists corrosion
  • One kit handles most common fastener sizes
Cons
  • Large case takes up significant shelf or trunk space
  • Not a pro-grade tool line; heavy daily use may wear it faster
  • Socket sizes are spread across many pieces, so some are rarely used
  • Case latches and hinges are the weak point on big kits

Questions and answers

Is the Husky 244-piece set worth it for a home mechanic?
Yes, if you work on your own cars and want one kit that covers both SAE and metric fasteners. The 72-tooth ratchets and broad size range handle most routine jobs. Pros who use tools daily should look at a pro-grade brand instead.
Does it include both SAE and metric sockets?
Yes. The set is listed as both SAE and metric, so it covers inch and millimeter fasteners. Check the piece list for the exact size range before buying if you need very large or very small sizes.
What is the ratchet tooth count and why does it matter?
The ratchets have 72 teeth, which means about a 5-degree swing to engage the next tooth. That lets you turn fasteners in tight spaces where a coarser ratchet would not fit.
How does it compare with the Husky 230-piece set?
The 244-piece set adds pieces and uses 72-tooth ratchets, so it offers finer ratcheting and slightly broader coverage. If you already own the smaller set, the upgrade is mainly about the ratchets and the extra sockets.
When is the best time to buy this set?
Tool sets like this often drop during holiday sales and spring home-improvement events. The current $186.26 at Home Depot as of November 4, 2026 is already near the low end of its recent range, so waiting may not save much.
Where is the Husky 244-Pieces 72-Tooth Ratchet Socket Mechanics Tool Set with Chest Storage cheapest?
