Our take on the IKEA EKENÄSET Armchair

The IKEA EKENÄSET is a mid-century-style armchair with a walnut-effect wood frame and Bomstad black leather upholstery. It stands out for its leather seat at a low price and its compact 29.5-inch height, which suits smaller rooms. IKEA's own listings put it around $249-$299 depending on the market, so check the current price against that range before buying.

  • Compact 29.5-inch height fits under windows and in tight corners
  • Walnut-effect frame gives a warmer look than plain black
  • Light and easy to move between rooms
  • Simple assembly with standard IKEA hardware
Cons
  • Bomstad leather is a coated split leather, not full-grain, so it can peel over years
  • Seat and back are firm with modest padding
  • No recline or swivel; fixed upright position
  • Frame is particleboard and veneer, not solid walnut

Questions and answers

Is the EKENÄSET worth it?
Yes if you want a leather-look accent chair at a low price and sit in it for short periods. If you need all-day comfort or full-grain leather, spend more elsewhere.
Is it real leather?
The Bomstad Black cover is coated split leather with a protective surface layer. It feels like leather but is not full-grain and can peel if it wears through the coating.
How does it compare to the IKEA STRANDMON?
The STRANDMON is a larger wingback with fabric or leather options and more padding. The EKENÄSET is smaller, lower and cheaper, but less plush.
What are the dimensions?
It is 29.5 inches high, with a seat width around 22 inches and a depth around 26 inches. Check the exact width and depth on the product page before ordering, since it is a compact chair.
What is in the box?
The chair ships flat with the frame, seat, back, legs and fittings. You assemble it with the included Allen key; no tools beyond that are needed.
When is it cheapest?
IKEA discounts it during family sales and end-of-season events, and it sometimes appears in the As-Is section. Watch the price history for drops below the usual $249-$299 range.
