Best forRenters who can't run low-voltage wiringDeck, step and railing edges that get direct sunBuying a full set at once for a yard or long stair run
Pros
  • Eight lights in one pack covers a typical deck or stair run
  • Dusk-to-dawn sensor means no switch or timer to set
  • No wiring, no transformer and no outdoor outlet needed
  • Warm white output is easier on the eye than cool white at night
  • Black housing blends into most deck and fence finishes
Cons
  • Solar output depends on how much direct sun each spot gets
  • Battery capacity fades over a few seasons, and cells are usually not user-replaceable
  • Warm white at low output can look dim on wide steps
  • No stated brightness, runtime or IP rating to compare against rivals
  • Mounting hardware and stakes may not suit every surface

Questions and answers

Is this 8-pack worth it over buying singles?
If you have a full stair run or deck edge, the pack usually costs less per light than singles and keeps the finish consistent. For one or two spots, buy individually.
How long do they stay lit at night?
Runtime depends on sun exposure and the internal battery; most solar step lights of this type run several hours after a full charge. Shaded spots will be noticeably shorter.
Do they need direct sunlight?
Yes. The panel needs a few hours of direct sun to charge the battery. Under a roof overhang or dense shade they will dim or go dark.
Are they waterproof?
They are built for outdoor deck and step use, but no IP rating is listed here. Mount them where water drains away rather than where it pools.
What comes in the box?
The pack contains eight lights with their solar panels and batteries built in. Check the listing for included screws or stakes before you plan the install.
When is the best time to buy?
Solar garden lighting tends to be discounted in late summer and around spring garden sales. Use the price history to see whether the current price is above or below the usual level.
