Our take on the Japanese Organic Cotton Shiki Futon Shikibuton

A traditional Japanese shiki futon: a medium-firm cotton mattress that folds for storage and doubles as a floor bed. It is handcrafted with organic cotton fill and an organic cotton cover, lace-tacked to hold the fill in place, and it has no raised base. The best new price is $339.98 at The Futon Shop as of November 7, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is no cheaper new option to compare against.

Questions and answers

Is this futon good for side sleepers?
It is medium firm with a firm cotton fill, which most side sleepers find too hard. Back and stomach sleepers usually do better on it.
Does it need a frame or tatami mat?
No frame is required, but it has no raised construction. A tatami mat or slatted base underneath helps air circulate and keeps the cotton dry.
How often does the cotton fill need replacing?
Cotton shiki futons typically need refilling or replacing after a few years of nightly use. Airing it regularly and rotating it slows compaction.
What sizes and thickness does it come in?
It is offered in multiple sizes, including King at 5 inches thick with 60 lbs of fill. Check the listing for the size you want.
Is it machine washable?
The organic cotton cover is not designed for machine washing. Spot clean it and air the futon in sunlight instead.
When is the price lowest?
Only one store lists it new, at $339.98 as of November 7, 2026. With a single seller there is little discounting, so watch for seasonal sales at The Futon Shop.
Where is the Japanese Organic Cotton Shiki Futon Shikibuton cheapest?
At The Futon Shop, for $339.98, 50% off, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Japanese Organic Cotton Shiki Futon Shikibuton?
Rated 3.7 out of 5 from 312 ratings.
