Our take on the Katina Sleeper Chair

The Katina is a twin-size sleeper chair: a 44-inch-wide upholstered seat that pulls out into a 72-inch bed. It is built on a hardwood frame with maple legs, high-resiliency foam and soft fiber padding, and covered in Belgian linen in Lilac. It does not recline, rock, swivel or glide, so it is a fixed piece that earns its space by doubling as a guest bed. No current price was provided, so check the price history before buying.

Best forStudio and small-guest-room ownersShoppers who want an occasional twin bed without a sofa bedBuyers who prefer linen upholstery over synthetic fabricGuest rooms used as a sitting room most of the year
Pros
  • Pulls out to a 72-inch bed, long enough for most adults
  • 44-inch seat width gives roomy single seating
  • Hardwood frame and maple legs rather than particleboard
  • High-resiliency foam core holds shape better than plain fiber fill
  • Belgian linen cover is a step up from standard polyester
Cons
  • Needs 98 inches of depth when open, so measure the room first
  • No recline, rock, swivel or glide
  • Linen wrinkles and stains more readily than performance fabric
  • Twin width only; not a couple's bed
  • Seat height of 18 inches suits most adults but is tall for small children

Questions and answers

How much floor space does it need when the bed is out?
The chair is 44 inches wide and 33 inches high, and it needs 98 inches of depth with the mattress open. The bed itself is 72 inches long. Leave clear space in front of the chair before you buy.
Is the pull-out bed comfortable for adults?
The mattress is 72 inches long and 44 inches wide, a standard twin, so most adults fit. The high-resiliency foam core and fiber padding are firmer than an air mattress but not a replacement for a real bed for nightly use.
Is it good for everyday sleeping or only guests?
It is best as an occasional bed for guests. There is no separate mattress upgrade path and the foam will compress with nightly use over time.
What is the upholstery, and how do I clean it?
It is Belgian linen in Lilac over a hardwood frame. Linen is not stain-resistant, so blot spills promptly and use a professional cleaner for the cover rather than machine washing.
Does it recline or swivel?
No. The Katina is a fixed sleeper chair with legs; the only movement is the pull-out bed mechanism.
When is the best time to buy it?
Sleeper chairs usually see the deepest discounts around major holiday sales and at the end of a season. Check the price history to see whether the current price is near its low.
