Our take on the KingSpec M.2 2280 2TB PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe Internal Solid State Drive

The KingSpec M.2 2280 2TB is a budget NVMe drive using the PCIe Gen3 x4 interface, rated at up to 3,500 MB/s sequential read. It is a plain internal SSD with no heatsink, aimed at laptops and desktops with an open M.2 slot. Its only new price is $239.99 at Newegg.com as of November 3, 2026, which is high for a Gen3 2TB drive; comparable Gen3 2TB models often sell well below that, so this price sits near the top of what this class costs.

Pros
  • 2TB capacity in a single-sided M.2 2280 stick
  • NVMe over PCIe Gen3 x4, up to 3,500 MB/s read
  • No heatsink, so it fits tight laptop slots
  • Simple drop-in upgrade for most modern motherboards
Cons
  • Gen3 speeds are half or less of current Gen4 drives
  • No DRAM cache or heatsink listed
  • Only one store prices it new, so no price competition
  • At $239.99 it costs more than many faster Gen4 2TB drives

Questions and answers

Is this drive worth $239.99?
Not at that price. Gen3 2TB drives from major brands usually sell for less, and Gen4 2TB drives often cost about the same. Buy it only if it is the one 2TB NVMe you can find in stock.
Will it fit my laptop?
It fits any slot that takes an M.2 2280 drive with NVMe support. Check your laptop's spec sheet for M.2 2280 and PCIe before buying; some slots are SATA-only or shorter.
How fast is it compared with Gen4 drives?
It is rated at 3,500 MB/s read, while Gen4 drives reach 5,000 to 7,000 MB/s. For games and everyday use the difference is small; for large file transfers it is noticeable.
Does it come with a heatsink or screws?
It is a bare M.2 2280 stick without a heatsink. Mounting screws usually come with your motherboard or laptop, not the drive, so check before installing.
Is it compatible with a PS5?
No. The PS5 requires a PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive with a heatsink, and this is Gen3 without one.
When is it cheapest?
There is no reliable sale pattern for this model, and only one store lists it new. Watch for a drop below $239.99 at Newegg.com rather than expecting regular discounts.
Where is the KingSpec M.2 2280 2TB PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe Internal Solid State Drive cheapest?
At Newegg.com, for $239.99, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the KingSpec M.2 2280 2TB PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe Internal Solid State Drive?
Rated 4.6 out of 5 from 206 ratings.
