Our take on the Klipsch RP-500M II Reference Premiere Bookshelf Speakers

The RP-500M II is Klipsch's second-generation Reference Premiere two-way bookshelf speaker, built around a 5.25-inch woofer and a 1-inch titanium tweeter loaded in a Tractrix horn. It is an 8-ohm, 75W continuous (300W peak) passive speaker with a rear Tractrix port, single gold-plated binding posts and a removable grille. The best new price is $389.99 at eBay as of November 6, 2026, against five stores listing it new.

Best forSmall to mid-size rooms on stands or shelvesHome theater front or surround dutyBuyers who like horn-loaded, dynamic soundVinyl and stereo setups with a modest amp
Pros
  • Horn tweeter gives high sensitivity and easy drive from small amps
  • Punchy 5.25-inch woofer with usable output down to 45 Hz
  • Rear Tractrix port lets it sit closer to a wall than many ported boxes
  • 8-ohm load is friendly to budget receivers and integrated amps
  • Cork pads and removable grille are practical touches
Cons
  • Horn treble can sound forward or bright to some ears
  • Bass rolls off below 45 Hz, so a subwoofer helps for movies
  • Rear port still needs some breathing room
  • Single binding posts rule out bi-wiring
  • Needs stands or solid shelves to sound its best

Questions and answers

Is the RP-500M II worth it over the original RP-500M?
The II adds a refined horn and crossover and a new woofer for smoother response. If you find the original discounted, it is still a strong buy; the II is the better speaker at similar money.
Do I need a subwoofer with these?
For music in a small room, no. For movies or deep bass below 45 Hz, a subwoofer fills in what the 5.25-inch woofer cannot.
What amplifier power do they need?
They are rated 75W continuous and 8 ohms, and the horn makes them easy to drive. A 50W-per-channel receiver or integrated amp is plenty for most rooms.
Can I place them close to a wall?
The rear Tractrix port tolerates closer placement than many ported speakers, but leave a few inches behind them for cleaner bass.
What comes in the box?
A pair of speakers, removable grilles, cork pads and the manual. Speaker wire and stands are not included.
When is the best time to buy?
The $389.99 eBay price as of November 6, 2026 is the lowest new price across five stores. Watch for holiday sales, when Klipsch bookshelf models often drop further.
