Questions and answers

Is kraft-faced insulation worth it over unfaced?

Yes for exterior wood-framed walls and ceilings in most US climates. The kraft facing slows moisture movement and saves you buying a separate vapor retarder. For interior walls, unfaced is enough.

Which side does the kraft facing go on?

The facing goes toward the warm, conditioned side of the wall or ceiling. In cold climates that means the inside of the room. Never sandwich two vapor retarders in one cavity.

Can I leave the kraft facing exposed?

In basements and crawl spaces the facing must be covered with drywall or another approved material because of fire code. In attics, check local code before leaving it exposed.

Does compressing the batts hurt performance?

Yes. Squashing a batt into a thinner cavity lowers its R-value. Buy the thickness that matches your stud depth, usually 3.5 inches for 2x4 walls and 5.5 inches for 2x6.

When is the price lowest?

Insulation prices move with seasonal demand, so late fall and winter tend to be softer than spring and summer. The best new price found was $154.93 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026.
