Our take on the Kodiak Canvas 12 x 9 Cabin

The Kodiak Canvas 12 x 9 Cabin is a four-season canvas cabin tent rated for 6 to 8 people, with a 7.5 ft center height and a 97 lb packed weight. Its hydraulic-pole frame and heavy canvas set it apart from nylon family tents: it stands up to wind, snow load and cold nights, but it is a truck-camping tent, not a backpacking one. At $699.99 at Amazon as of November 3, 2026, it sits at the top of its recent range, with only one store pricing it new.

Best forFamilies and groups of 4 to 6 who camp from a vehicleCold-weather and shoulder-season campers
Campers who want a tent that lasts many seasons
Base camps where setup time and durability matter more than weight
Pros
  • Heavy canvas breathes well and stays warmer than nylon in cold weather
  • 7.5 ft center height lets most adults stand upright
  • Hydraulic poles go up quickly for a tent this size
  • Four-season build handles wind, rain and light snow
  • Large floor area fits cots and gear for a family
Cons
  • 97 lb packed weight rules out carrying it any distance
  • Canvas needs to be fully dry before storage or it mildews
  • Costs far more than a comparable nylon family tent
  • Few stores stock it, so price competition is limited
  • Condensation can build up in cold, still weather without ventilation

Questions and answers

Is the Kodiak Canvas 12 x 9 Cabin worth $699.99?
If you camp from a vehicle several times a year and want a tent that lasts a decade, yes. At $699.99 at Amazon as of November 3, 2026 it is at the top of its recent range, so waiting for a drop is reasonable if you are not in a hurry.
How many people does it really sleep?
It is rated for 6 to 8, but 6 adults on sleeping pads is comfortable and 8 is tight. With cots, plan on 4 to 5 people plus gear.
Can one person set it up?
Yes. The hydraulic poles make setup manageable for one adult, though the 97 lb bag is awkward to move alone. Two people make it much faster.
Does it work in winter?
It is a four-season tent and handles cold, wind and light snow well. Ventilation matters: without airflow, condensation builds up inside the canvas.
What comes in the box?
The tent, its pole set, stakes and a carry bag. Check that stakes are included, since some buyers add heavier ones for hard ground.
Is it cheaper at other stores?
Only one store currently prices it new, at $699.99 at Amazon as of November 3, 2026. With little competition, discounts are rare, so compare against used listings if budget matters.
Where is the Kodiak Canvas 12 x 9 Cabin cheapest?
At Amazon, for $699.99, as of our latest check.
