Our take on the LG 16" gram +view IPS Portable Monitor

The LG gram +view is a 16-inch portable monitor with a 2560 x 1600 IPS panel, USB-C and DisplayPort inputs, and a 3.4 lb body. It is built as a second screen for laptops, matching the 16:10 aspect of LG's gram laptops. The 60 Hz refresh and 30 ms response suit documents and video, not fast games. Its latest best price is $349 at LG as of November 3.

  • Sharp 2560 x 1600 resolution on a 16-inch panel
  • 16:10 aspect gives more vertical room than 16:9
  • Single USB-C cable carries video and power
  • IPS panel keeps colors stable at wide angles
  • Folds flat and weighs 3.4 lb for travel
Cons
  • 60 Hz refresh and 30 ms response are slow for gaming
  • No built-in battery, so it draws power from the laptop
  • Few ports: USB-C and DisplayPort only
  • Stand and cover add bulk compared with a bare panel

Questions and answers

Is the LG gram +view worth it?
For laptop users who want a sharp, light second screen, yes. At $349 at LG as of November 3 it costs more than many 15.6-inch 1080p portables, but the 2560 x 1600 panel is noticeably sharper.
Does it work with a MacBook or Windows laptop?
Yes, over USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode, which most recent MacBooks and Windows laptops support. Check that your laptop's USB-C port carries video before buying.
Does it have a battery?
No. It draws power over USB-C from the connected laptop, so expect shorter laptop battery life when it is in use.
Is 60 Hz enough for gaming?
It is fine for casual and strategy games but not for fast shooters. The 30 ms response time and 60 Hz refresh are below what gaming monitors offer.
What is in the box?
The monitor, a cover that doubles as a stand, and USB-C and DisplayPort cables. Confirm the cable bundle with the seller, since bundles vary.
When is it cheapest?
Portable monitors tend to drop during back-to-school and Black Friday sales. Track its price history and buy when it falls below the recent $349 level.
What do buyers say about the LG 16" gram +view IPS Portable Monitor?
