The Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx is a maximum-cushion rugged-trail running shoe built for long days on hard, technical ground. It pairs a 36 mm heel / 30 mm forefoot stack of FLOATPRO foam with a 6 mm drop, a Kevlar-reinforced Matryx upper and a Vibram MegaGrip outsole, at 1 lb. 4.3 oz. per pair. It is vegan and uses recycled materials. The best new price is $121.73 at REI as of November 4, 2026, the only new price listed.

Best forLong-distance trail runners who want max cushioningRunners on rocky, technical trailsHeavier runners wanting a stable, protective platformHikers and fastpackers who want a running-shoe feel
Pros
  • Vibram MegaGrip outsole grips wet rock and loose dirt
  • Generous 36 mm heel stack of FLOATPRO foam soaks up impact
  • Kevlar-reinforced Matryx upper resists abrasion and holds the foot
  • Light for the cushioning: about 1 lb. 4.3 oz. per pair
  • Vegan build with recycled materials
Cons
  • No rock plate, so sharp stones can be felt through the foam
  • 6 mm drop and tall stack suit neutral runners less than low-drop fans
  • Ankle-height collar runs warm in hot weather
  • Matryx upper has little stretch, so fit is less forgiving

Questions and answers

Is the Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx worth it?
For long, rugged trail runs it is a strong pick: max cushioning, Vibram MegaGrip and a tough Matryx upper at about 1 lb. 4.3 oz. per pair. At $121.73 at REI as of November 4, 2026, it is a reasonable price for a shoe with this spec.
How does it compare with the Merrell MTL Long Sky?
The MTL Adapt has a taller, softer FLOATPRO stack (36 mm heel) for maximum cushioning, while the Long Sky line is lower and more ground-connected for fast, technical racing. Choose the Adapt for long distance and comfort, the Long Sky for speed.
Does it have a rock plate?
No. The MTL Adapt relies on its FLOATPRO foam stack for protection, so sharp stones can be felt more than in shoes with a rock plate.
What is the drop and stack height?
It has a 6 mm heel-to-toe drop, with a 36 mm heel stack and 30 mm forefoot stack.
Is it true to size?
The Matryx upper has little stretch, so most runners stay with their usual trail-shoe size; those between sizes or with wide feet should consider going up a half size.
When is it cheapest?
The only new price listed is $121.73 at REI as of November 4, 2026. Trail shoes typically drop during end-of-season and holiday sales, so watch for markdowns then.
Where is the Merrell Men's MTL Adapt Matryx Trail-Running Shoes cheapest?
At REI, for $121.73, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Merrell Men's MTL Adapt Matryx Trail-Running Shoes?
Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 139 ratings.
