Our take on the Merrick Grain Free Real Lamb Sweet Potato Recipe Dry Dog Food

Merrick Grain Free Real Lamb & Sweet Potato Recipe is a dry adult dog food built on deboned lamb, lamb meal and sweet potato, with no grains, corn, wheat or soy. It adds glucosamine and chondroitin for joint support and omega fatty acids for skin and coat. It comes in 4, 10, 12, 22 and 25 lb bags. Merrick's grain-free line is widely sold, so prices swing by bag size and retailer; the 22 and 25 lb bags are usually the best value per pound.

Questions and answers

Is Merrick Grain Free Real Lamb good for dogs with allergies?
It avoids grains, corn, wheat and soy, which helps some itchy dogs. Lamb is still a common allergen, so if your dog reacted to lamb before, this is not the formula to try.
How does it compare with Merrick's chicken recipe?
Same grain-free base and joint supplements, with lamb and lamb meal instead of chicken. It suits dogs that do poorly on chicken or owners who want a red-meat protein.
Does it contain glucosamine for joints?
Yes. Merrick adds glucosamine and chondroitin, which is useful for large breeds and older dogs. It is a supplement level, not a treatment for arthritis.
What sizes does it come in?
Bags of 4, 10, 12, 22 and 25 lb. The 22 and 25 lb bags cost the least per pound, so they suit medium and large dogs.
How should I switch my dog to this food?
Mix it with the old food over about seven days, increasing the new food each day. A slow switch reduces the chance of loose stools.
When is the price lowest?
Large bags are cheapest per pound, and prices drop during retailer sales and subscription discounts. Check the price history before buying a 22 or 25 lb bag.
