Is this insert worth it?

It makes sense if you already have a fireplace opening and want gas heat without a chimney rebuild. Compare the installed cost, including venting and labor, against a direct vent stove or a gas log set.

Will it fit my fireplace?

It is an insert, so the firebox opening must be large enough and clearances met. Measure the opening and have an installer confirm fit before ordering.

Does it work in a power outage?

The millivolt ignition version does not need household power to light or run. The electronic ignition version typically needs power, so confirm which version you are buying.

What venting does it need?

It uses 3x3 inch direct vent pipe, which is a small coaxial flue. The termination must be placed per the manual's clearances from windows, doors and grade.

What comes in the box?

Expect the insert, burner and logs, and basic hardware. Vent pipe, termination, remote and thermostat are usually separate; confirm the package with the seller.

Our take on the Napoleon 29" Oakville 3 Direct Vent Gas Fireplace Insert

The Napoleon Oakville 3 is a 29-inch direct vent gas fireplace insert that drops into an existing masonry or factory-built fireplace and vents through a 3x3 coaxial flue. It runs on millivolt or electronic ignition, so it can light with a wall switch, remote or thermostat and keep working in a power outage on the millivolt version. Direct venting pulls combustion air from outside and exhausts outside, so it needs no chimney draft and no room air for burning.
