Is the Commander RD-6 worth it?

At $10.88 at Amazon as of November 3, 2026, yes for a first blaster or a spare. It is simple, battery-free and includes 12 darts. Serious players will want a clip-fed blaster instead.

Does it need batteries?

No. It is a spring-powered, pump-action blaster, so there is nothing to charge or replace.

How does slam fire work?

Hold the trigger down and pump the slide. Each pump fires a dart, so you can empty the six-dart drum in a few seconds.

What darts does it take?

Standard Nerf Elite foam darts. It ships with 12 and is compatible with N-Strike Elite darts and clips.

Is it good for an 8-year-old?

Yes. Nerf recommends it for ages 8 and up, and at about 1.1 lbs it is light enough for smaller hands. The pump priming is the main thing younger kids may struggle with.

Budget blasters like this one usually dip during holiday sales and back-to-school promotions. The current $10.88 at Amazon is already near the bottom of its recent range.
