Is the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 worth it over the 24-70mm f/2.8?

It trades one stop of light and some edge sharpness for a much longer reach and lower weight and cost. If you shoot events in dim light, the 24-70mm f/2.8 is the better tool; for travel and daylight work, the 24-120mm covers more without lens changes.

Does it work on DX bodies?

Yes. On a DX body it gives a 36-180mm equivalent field of view, which makes it a telephoto zoom rather than a wide-to-normal lens.

Nikon rates VR II at 3.5 stops. In practice it helps at the long end in low light, but it does not freeze moving subjects.

The lens comes with a bayonet lens hood. Front and rear caps are standard with the lens; a case is not listed among the included accessories.

Is it weather-sealed?

No. The lens is not waterproof or dust-sealed, so protect it in rain and dusty conditions.

The AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR from Nikon spans a useful wide-angle to short-telephoto range and features a constant f/4 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. Three aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce spherical and chromatic aberrations in order to produce a high degree of sharpness and clarity. Also benefitting image quality, both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Supporting the optics is VR II image stabilization, which compensates for camera shake to help realize sharp imagery when shooting handheld. A Silent Wave Motor is also used to provide fast and precise autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override.

Standard zoom is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 36-180mm equivalent focal length range.
